Roberts Elementary Chess Club – 2024 Fall Session

What: Chess instruction with National Master Justin Gardner and Coach Kacey
Who: Beginner/Novice and Intermediate/Advanced.  Ages 5-11.  Spacing is LIMITED – only 22 spots for Beginner/Novice and 22 spots for Intermediate/Advanced.
Where: Roberts Elementary School, 6000 Greenbriar Drive, Houston, TX 77030
Session: 16-week (32 classes) chess course (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Beginner/Novice Group Taught by Coach Kacey
Intermediate/Advanced Taught by Coach Justin – *PLEASE NOTE* – your child must be approved by Coach Justin in order to be in Intermediate/Advanced.

October 8th and 10th – Classes 13 and 14
October 15th and 17th – Classes 15 and 16
October 22nd and 24th – Classes 17 and 18
October 29th and 31st – Classes 19 and 20
November 5th and 7th – Classes 21 and 22
November 12th and 14th – Classes 23 and 24
November 19th and 21st – Classes 25 and 26
November 26th and 28th – NO CLASSES – Thanksgiving
December 3rd and 5th – Classes 27 and 28

Time: Tuesdays and Thursdays (Beginner/Novice and Intermediate/Advanced) from 3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. (Kindergarten – 5th Grade)
*OPTIONAL Add-On* – “Tournament Practice Classes” on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Intermediate/Advanced ONLY!)
from 4:30 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. (Kindergarten – 5th Grade) – while there is no formal instruction in these classes, students will be playing simulated tournament games using chess clocks, writing down chess notation, and playing with USCF (United States Chess Federation) rules such as “touch move” and “touch take”.  These “Tournament Practice Classes” are designed to get students ready for upcoming tournaments.
Levels: Beginners/Novice – completely new to chess, knows how the pieces move, and may/may not know about castling.
Intermediate/Advanced
 – knows castling, development, check, checkmate (and be able to carry out a checkmate), stalemate, and tactics (such as pins, double attacks/forks, and skewers). *PLEASE NOTE* – your child must be approved by Coach Justin in order to be in Intermediate/Advanced.
*OPTIONAL Add-On* – “Tournament Practice Classes” (Intermediate/Advanced ONLY!)

Tuition: $590 for 16-week (32 classes) chess course on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
